MEET ME AT THE MANGO TREE (Doco Prize)
A compelling trio of stories, filmed in Tamil Nadu (southern India), from veteran director Brian McKenzie (Winter’s Harvest SFF80, I’ll Be Home for Christmas SFF84). The first segment follows the tribulations of a man who scrapes a living with his street-side ironing shack. The second depicts a younger man, who approaches the world of work rather more casually. Finally, we meet a diligent coconut gatherer, who runs a stall by the railway crossing; a livelihood that’s threatened by the disintegration of his bicycle. The three stories, each beautifully composed, illustrate the fragile nature of a worker’s day-to-day existence in this region with a wry humour and marked dignity. JN•
