LAST RIDE
Resonating with the ethereal beauty and poetic urgency of the cinema of Terrence Malick, this highly-anticipated feature debut from Glendyn Ivin (following his 2003 Cannes win with the short film Cracker Bag) announces him as a director to watch. SFF Patron Hugo Weaving is commanding as the brusque, withdrawn Kev, an ex-con who has committed a violent crime and is on the run with his young son Chook (an intuitive performance from newcomer Tom Russell). What exactly they are escaping is revealed in accumulating fragments as they travel deeper into the South Australian hinterlands (ravishingly photographed by Greig Fraser). The geography of isolation both physical and emotional is precisely rendered in a sequence at Lake Gardener where the tenuous bond between father and son unravels. CS•
